A key stakeholder audience that the Centre for Climate Engagement works with are young people; be they current students of Hughes Hall, the broader University of Cambridge, or external to the Cambridge eco-system. We engage with students, recent students, and early career professionals in a number of ways.
The work of CCE contributes towards the values of Hughes Hall College, such as inclusivity, impact and innovation, and we actively seek opportunities to involve and engage the community.
Tagged below are outputs from many of our engagements, including events, our internship programmes, and deliverables that our engagements with young people have helped to develop. We are proud of this work, and of helping to ensure the next generation are actively engaging in making a difference in the race to netzero.

Youth Engagement Highlights
CCE Internship Programme
CCE’s internship programme has been running since 2022. This year will see the the fouth intact of summer interns, as well as an Easter 2025 intake. Last year, 2024, saw unprecedented number of applications, with nearly 100 submissions, just over 50% applying from Cambridge colleges and the other 50% from universities across the UK. We were delighted to offer 14 places, to candidates come from a diverse array of countries, including Canada, Chile, Estonia, Malaysia, and Pakistan. Among them, nine have studied at the University of Cambridge, with three either currently attending or having graduated from Hughes Hall. Their academic backgrounds span a broad spectrum of disciplines, such as economics, environmental policy, biological sciences, management studies, and physics.
Law and Climate Atlas
The Law and Climate Atlas is a guide to the evolving relationship between law and climate action. The Atlas has attracted over 15,000 views to date, from over 100 countries, reflecting its impact and value to a global audience. Recent updates have added three new areas of law to the UK version, and seven new areas to the US version bringing the total to 40 areas.
The Law and Climate Atlas has been developed with the valued input of some of our interns over the years. Key contributors to its development (acknowledgements here) have written sections of the atlas, which has now become a key resource for lawyers and academics in the area of law for climate action.
Other examples of youth engagement have been participation in workshops and events, with approximately two thirds of attendees at CCE-run events being students and early career researchers. In addition, we have had contributions to key reports, blogs and news pieces from young people. See below for more details of our work that has involved supporting and working with young people.
