CCE welcomes 14 summer interns

20 Aug 2024

The Centre for Climate Engagement at Hughes Hall is delighted to welcome the 14 successful interns who will contribute to various climate focused projects over the summer, working in Cambridge and remotely. The internship scheme, now in its third year, saw an unprecedented number of applications, with nearly 100 submissions, just over 50% applying from Cambridge colleges and the other 50% from universities across the UK.

The successful candidates come from a diverse array of countries, including Canada, Chile, Estonia, Malaysia, and Pakistan. Among them, nine have studied at the University of Cambridge, with three either currently attending or having graduated from Hughes Hall. Their academic backgrounds span a broad spectrum of disciplines, such as economics, environmental policy, biological sciences, management studies, and physics.

Emily Farnworth, Director of the CCE said:

“We are thrilled to welcome our new interns to the Centre for Climate Engagement.
Their diverse backgrounds and exceptional skills will greatly contribute to our ongoing efforts to address climate change.
We look forward to seeing the innovative ideas and fresh perspectives they will bring to our projects.”

The interns will work on the following projects:

Law for Climate Action
Camilo Andres Cornejo Martinez

Richelle Khor and Camilo Andres Cornejo Martinez will conduct legal research for the CCE’s Law and Climate Atlas project. Their work will focus on updating the Atlas with recent legal developments and expanding the Atlas to cover new legal areas and jurisdictions, supporting comparative legal research and analysis to map the intersections between climate change and various areas of law.

Joel Sodzi

Joel Sodzi and Hannah Zia will assist in the CCE’s law and policy programmes, specifically on projects aimed at creating practical climate policy solutions. They will contribute to an initiative which aims to map how different climate issues have been addressed in law across the world, and how legal and policy frameworks might be reformed.

Content team
Jillian Neufeldt

Jillian Neufeldt will support the CCE’s Content Team to gather academic and industry research to develop an updated CCE briefing on greenhouse gas removals (GGRs), engaging with experts across Cambridge and beyond. This research will also help to inform CCE’s work on GGR – including nature-based solutions as well as technological solutions – as an important contribution to the global net zero transition.

Commonwealth Climate and Law Initiative (CCLI)

Antri Panoura will support two climate action organisations: the Centre for Climate Engagement and the Commonwealth Climate and Law Initiative. She will update the Primer on Climate Change: Directors’ Duties and Disclosure Obligations, a tool for non-executive directors outlining their climate obligations and how to integrate climate change into company strategies and legal oversight.

Climate Governance Initiative
Nafisa Agha

Nafisa Agha will support the CCE’s Content team in producing a series of briefing notes focused on codes and frameworks related to corporate climate governance from around the world. These briefing notes will make up part of a larger navigator tool of corporate climate governance tools for the Climate Governance Initiative’s international network of non-executive directors.

Diana Bridgeman
Joseph McLaughlin

Diana Bridgman and Joseph McLaughlin will assist the Climate Governance Initiative team by analysing global surveys. They will compare and summarise methodologies and results to understand directors’ actions and motivations. This analysis will help measure the Initiative’s effectiveness and guide efforts for maximum impact in driving climate action in boardrooms.

Matthew Taylor

Matthew Taylor will contribute to the development of the Climate Governance Initiative’s partnerships programme. He will use his research, database management, and organisational skills to understand how market research, email marketing, and event planning drive the goals of a climate-focused non-profit organisation.

CANFFUND project
Benedict Pery

Caitlin Cutts and Benedict Pery will support the data workstream of the Locally Determined Contribution project, funded by Innovate UK. They will work closely with CCE researchers, starting with information gathered at a recent workshop, to analyse local emissions data and align it with national data, including the local greenhouse gas inventory from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

Matthew Cresswell
Mateusz Gregorczyk

Matthew Cresswell and Mateusz Gregorczyk will support the investment workstream of the Innovate UK-funded Locally Determined Contribution project. Beginning with data gathered at a recent investment workshop, the interns will collaborate with CCE researchers to analyse some of the barriers to local investment flows and the role of finance in achieving net zero.
