Judges and Climate Change

17 Oct 2025
4:00pm - 6:00pm

Pavilion Room, Hughes Hall

In the first event of the Cambridge Seminar Series on Law and the Climate Crisis 2025/26, Lord Robert Carnwath CVO will talk about Judges and Climate Change, with an opportunity for networking afterwards.

Throughout his career as barrister and judge, Lord Carnwath has taken a special interest in environmental law. In more recent years, he has watched the development of case-law round the world on the challenges of climate change. In this lecture he will look back at his experiences, and discuss some of the more significant cases, commenting in particular on the role of the judges, and the proper limits of ‘judicial activism’.

Lord Robert Carnwath CVO is a former justice of the UK Supreme Court, and currently (inter alia) a Yorke Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the University of Cambridge and Visiting Professor in Practice of the Grantham Institute at the LSE.
