Video: New groundbreaking lecture featuring Dr Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization

22 Nov 2024

Academic experts on SMEs and climate change engaged in an online discussion in October 2024 with insights collated by Dr Eldrid Herrington, Head of Academic Engagement at the CCE to inform COP29 discussions.

In this video address to the colloquium, the UN Climate Change high-level champion for COP29 expressed gratitude to the CCE, to professors, academic colleagues, and SME experts for their efforts in advancing the SME Climate Proofing Campaign.

Key points:

Science is highlighted as central to climate efforts, underpinning all initiatives under the UNFCCC process. Arparadai noted that the UN Climate Change high-level champions’ work relies on rigorous scientific research from academic bodies and organisations like the IPCC and WMO. At the national level, evidence-based policies from climate advisory councils, such as those in the UK and Australia, are essential to supporting the ambitious goals of the Paris Agreement.

The high-level champion reflected on the importance of interdisciplinary solutions, with focus areas including AI in sustainability and innovative green technologies. These areas show how diverse sectors can contribute to building climate resilience, and the meeting today continues this work, particularly in supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in adapting to climate change.

The SME Climate Proofing Campaign aims to support SMEs with resources, highlight their leadership in sustainability, and encourage corporations to integrate climate-conscious SMEs into their supply chains. Academic experts and international climate networks are called upon to collaborate on creating an evidence-based foundation for these initiatives, guiding future decision-making and action.

The speaker extended thanks to institutions like the International Universities Climate Alliance and Hughes Hall Centre for Climate Engagement for convening the meeting. She underscored the urgency of the climate challenge and the need for real, impactful solutions, drawing inspiration from collaborative dialogues.

“I would like to thank the International Universities Climate Alliance and the Hughes Hall Centre for Climate Engagement for convening this important meeting and making this action possible.

This is an academic dialogue, so understanding and building the knowledge base is key.
